Genesis 3 + Psalm 3

So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.

Genesis 3:6

Eve disobeys God when she eats the fruit of the forbidden tree! She operates from the mind of what she can see and therefore, desire rather than out of God's command. Eve's desire influences and changes her perception of God's command. Eve shares the fruit with her husband, Adam and then both have knowledge of good and evil. As we know, God is a just God which means sin has consequences. This is the first sin which necessitates God laying out the consequences for sin.

It is interesting to think that before Adam and Eve ate the fruit, there was no sin. It is difficult to imagine a life without consequences because each of us have sinned and faced the consequences of it. It is also easy to see things as pain during childbirth and a wife having desires contrary to her husband as natural rather than as consequential. We often do not think that pain in childbirth is a consequence of passing sin onto children or that having desires contrary to a husband is a consequence of not living as one flesh as God designed in marriage. We think that consequences are normal but consequences are the result of living in a fallen world. There are women who don't have pain in childbirth and there are married couples without conflict. The reason is because they are living in God's design (in my opinion).

And the Lord God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them.

Genesis 3:21

Scripture provides us with hope and reassurance. There are consequences for sin but God is a loving and caring Father who provides even after we sin.

Many are saying of my soul,

There is no salvation for him in God. Selah

But you, O LORD, are a shield about me,

my glory, and the lifter of my head.

Psalm 3:2–3

Psalm 3 echos Genesis 3 by saying even when we think we are too far gone and that our world is fallen, God is our salvation. He is enough to be our redeemer. He provides a physical shield, we can look up to Him for hope and seek after glory for His kingdom.

Salvation belongs to the LORD;

your blessing be on your people! Selah

Psalm 3:8

My response is that God is our perfect provider who lives what is good and who redeems broken people. We cannot allow what we see, think, feel, or desire to lead us astray. We must look to truth to know what we believe and act accordingly.
