Genesis 1 + Psalm 1
The whole Bible begins in Genesis 1 with an account of God‘s creation. God's creation of light (v. 3), heaven (v. 8, earth and seas (v. 10), vegetation (v. 11), seasons (v. 14), stars (v. 16), water creatures and birds (v. 20), livestock (v. 24), and finally man (v. 26). Genesis notes that God's creation is good on each day. Based on what God created and that He created it all to be good, it stands out that our Creator has a care for beauty and order through His intentionally crafted and designed creation. I believe the natural response to recognizing and knowing God as Creator is to look to Him for guidance.
If we believe that He is all powerful and that His creation is good and that we are a part of that creation that is good then it makes sense to look to His wisdom for guidance. If we believe that He is in control then why would we not want to look to His word for direction in our life?
Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in the way of sinners,
nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
but his delight is in the law of the LORD,
and on his law he meditates day and night.
Psalm 1:1–2
The Psalm says that God blesses those who delight in Him. He blesses those who love Him and look to Him for guidance. Those who think about Him around the clock. The result of delighting in the Lord is being one who prospers.
He is like a tree planted by streams of water
that yields its fruit in its season,
and its leaf does not wither.
In all that he does, he prospers.
Psalm 1:3
Interestingly, God's first command to man is:
And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
Genesis 1:28
God's first command is for us to be fruitful and multiple which means having babies. It means creating more of those who live in the image of God by raising faithful children and by sharing the gospel so people can be born again. As a tree needs water, people need to watered with God's word. By feeding with faith and truth, people are watered to grow and to prosper. Our ultimate purpose then is to multiply - to multiply the image of God that He created us in.
To me, I find this purpose encouraging and exciting. God created us and commanded us what to do. I often struggle with purpose, what should I do and what is my called and so on. Here it is. To be fruitful and multiply. To meditate on my Creator and prosper.
