Be Alert

“I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them. For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites, and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naive. For your obedience is known to all, so that I rejoice over you, but I want you to be wise as to what is good and innocent as to what is evil. The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.”
Romans 16:17–20 (ESV)

The Beginning of Change

Paul’s words are a clear call to be alert in every area of life. We live surrounded by distractions and subtle influences that can deceive us or keep us stuck in old, destructive patterns. Sometimes those forces come from the world around us. Other times, they come from our own habits, thoughts, or unhealed places.

If we want to live fully — with vitality, fertility, and vibrancy — we have to wake up. We must become aware of what’s happening both in and around us.

Before we can move toward the life we long for, we must understand where we’re starting, what’s holding us back, and where God is calling us to go. With awareness, we begin to discern what is good and what is not, what is from God and what is not, what habits strengthen us and what habits slowly break us down.

Spiritual Awareness

Spiritual awareness is built on a foundation of faith — spending time in God’s Word, reading the Gospel, and listening to wise and trusted mentors in your church, small group, or through biblically sound media.

The Bible is unchanging truth. It is the Word of God which is infallible, reliable, and eternal. We can believe it beyond a reasonable doubt because Jesus died on the cross and rose again three days later. Scripture is filled with fulfilled prophecies that confirm God’s hand through history. When we seek guidance, we should anchor our hearts in something secure, consistent, and true — God’s Word.

When you seek spiritual guidance, look for those who are biblically minded, who love the Lord, and who base their wisdom on His truth. This kind of discernment is essential to avoid deception and confusion. When our awareness is grounded in Scripture, we learn to separate truth from lies, light from darkness, and wisdom from noise.

The Biblical Principle of Awareness Applied to Health

Scripture teaches us to be watchful and discerning. Awareness is a practical principle that can guide how we live. When we apply biblical awareness to health, we start living in alignment with how God designed us to thrive.

Oura Ring

One of the most practical ways to grow awareness is through tracking. The Oura Ring is a great tool that shines light on our daily patterns such as sleep, activity, and key biometrics. Here’s why those matter:

  1. Sleep is the foundation of health. It’s when your body repairs, your brain restores, and your hormones rebalance. Without deep, consistent rest, your body can’t recover, your mind can’t focus, and your spirit feels weary. Sleep strengthens memory, supports immunity, and is essential for healing and physical, mental, and spiritual growth.

  2. Movement is medicine. Science continues to show that frequent, low-level movement (as opposed to short, high-intensity bursts) throughout the day supports circulation, focus, and emotional balance. Personally, I like to take a lap around the office between meetings or walk the long way to the next room. These small, intentional choices add up and help reset both mind and body.

  3. Two numbers I check daily are my resting heart rate (RHR) and heart rate variability (HRV). A high RHR overnight can mean your body isn’t recovering well. A low HRV can indicate stress or fatigue. When your RHR lowers and HRV rises, that’s a sign of recovery and resilience.

Tracking helps make the invisible visible. You begin to see patterns you’d otherwise miss.

Natural Cycles

A new tool I’ve started using and love is Natural Cycles, which integrates easily with the Oura Ring. It’s a powerful resource for fertility awareness whether you’re looking to conceive, avoid pregnancy, or simply understand your cycle more deeply.

Natural Cycles tracks your basal body temperature (BBT), the subtle rise and fall of body temperature that reflects hormonal shifts throughout the month.

  • Follicular Phase (before ovulation): In the first half of your cycle, temperatures stay lower as estrogen takes the lead. Energy often feels lighter and more outward-focused during this time. Cervical mucus becomes thinner and more fluid, a sign of growing fertility and your body’s preparation for ovulation.

  • Ovulation: As estrogen peaks, the release of an egg triggers a rise in progesterone, causing your temperature to climb slightly, a shift that confirms ovulation has occurred. This is your most fertile window, often marked by clear, stretchy, egg-white cervical fluid.

  • Luteal Phase (after ovulation): During this phase, progesterone remains elevated, keeping temperatures higher and energy more inward and reflective. Cervical mucus thickens or dries as the fertile window closes.

Natural Cycles makes it easy to log these patterns, along with other symptoms such as breast tenderness, cramps, back pain, cervical mucus, or mood changes.

When you learn your body’s natural flow, you build a deeper relationship with it. You begin to notice how your energy, focus, and emotional state shift through each phase. You start to live in sync with the design God created.

Spiritual and Physical Alignment

Awareness is discernment. The same way Paul calls us to stay spiritually awake and guard against deception, we can stay physically aware and guard against habits that steal our peace and vitality.

Whether it’s self-sabotaging patterns, stress cycles, or old thought loops, we can’t change what we don’t notice. Once we see it, we can surrender it to God, shift our habits, and live from a place of truth and intention.
